The Stars Out Here Have a Past

So far this devblog has been about tech, features and family anecdotes. Today, for the first time, it's about something else: the story. Because Blocks Beyond The Stars has one — it's called "The VEGA Protocol", and it isn't told in cutscenes, but in things you find.

It starts quietly. You wake up aboard a ship you don't know. The onboard voice calls herself VEGA, her memory is damaged, and of everything she once knew, a single core directive remains: protect humans. So you start doing what you do in a block world — mine, build, survive.

But then you find the first wreck. And VEGA goes quiet. The wreck's identification code is old — and it's related to her own.

Piece by piece — with every data cube, every wreck, every recovered memory fragment — her memory returns. A name surfaces: the Scout and Pioneer Service. It really existed. It charted the very stars you're settling right now. And it didn't simply fade away — something wiped it out. The machines hunting you out there? They used to be ours. Scouts and wardens, built to explore and protect. Now all they do is hunt.

That's all we're telling. Just this much: the story has thirteen chapters, it rewards curiosity over speed — and whoever digs all the way to the end learns not only what happened to the Service, but something about themselves that we are definitely not writing down here. 🚀

What wiped out the Service? Why does VEGA recognize the wreck's identification code? And why is your survival her highest priority? The answers are out there between the stars.

(Justus has known the ending for ages, by the way, and didn't spoil it once during testing. Word of honor.)
